Understanding ecosystems starts with connections.

What if the various aspects of an organization each existed on a separate, flat plane?

Your reality would be defined by what you could see in each direction horizontally around you. Other planes may be visible, but you couldn't quite make it out in its entirety (because you can't perceive depth). You would have limited, if any, contact with others.

What if you now had the ability to look up and down in addition to horizontally?

You would see other planes and you may become aware of people doing things similar to you. Or you might figure out a way to share resources. These like-minded people around you start to align and new relationships will form. This is what social media and technology did for people and organizations. It made people aware of other things happening around them.

This kind of thinking is important for developing an understanding of one's place in an ecosystem.
