Working behind the scenes is often necessary, particularly when it’s a sensitive topic.
These topics might include human resources issues, mergers and acquisitions, or new product development, for instance.
Working in the shadows of an organization to intentionally keep a project, working group, or agenda hidden from view is another game altogether. These kinds of things are usually self-serving.
As organizations and their processes become more open and transparent, I’m hopeful for a new era of corporate culture and governance. I know of a few firms that are doing this well or at least attempting to change.
Getting change to stick will require leaders at all levels who can be held accountable and employees who are willing to speak up and ask the tough questions.
