You can sometimes cover more ground on your own. It can be liberating.

Other times, working with a team is a better option.

Over time I’ve realized that it’s important to be able to do both. There will be times when you are isolated and need to handle something on your own. There will also be times when you need to be able to collaborate with others.

I see the ideal situation as having the ability to act on your own, but also being able to function with a team. Working at the extremes–only being comfortable with working entirely alone or only in a team environment–doesn’t help anyone except yourself.

For the lone wolfs (me!), start sharing your ideas with other people. You may find that people may want to hear what you’ve learned. For the people that don’t like to step out on their own, raise your hand and volunteer to take something on solo. Get involved.

As the workplace becomes more dynamic, more will be asked of people to get work done. Getting out of your comfort zone is the pathway to growth.
