My first impression of what a leader does was from TV. It was probably a politician making an eloquent speech during a presidential campaign.
I’ve realized that over time leaders come in different shapes and sizes with different approaches. Not all leaders need to be eloquent.
Here’s my current take: They build organizations.
In the same way that architects assemble materials to create a building, leaders gather resources like people, money, time, or materials to resolve issues. Likely in alignment with a vision and a plan.
As builders of organizations, the best leaders take on a holistic view of what’s going on and make micro-adjustments along the way to keep everyone on course.
And this is something that anyone can do. Leadership isn’t reserved for a particular kind of person.
Usually, commitment to a goal or an objective is enough to motivate and inspire one to step forward and make a difference.
